You Can Be A Doctor is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation founded and run by a team of doctors and medical students. We support state school pupils who are applying to studying medicine at university and encourage everyone to consider it as an option. We’re passionately working towards equal opportunity for young people from areas and schools that do not have a tradition for producing medical students. Our dedication to these goals comes from our belief that social diversity in the medical profession is good for both doctors and patients.
Deciding that you want to go to university and study medicine is a huge decision and making that choice can be a big commitment. Getting into medicine is becoming increasingly difficult so now, more than ever, it is important to work hard to achieve the required grades and build up a strong personal statement through extracurricular activities and work experience. While this can seem daunting, we are able to guide pupils right from their decision to consider a career in medicine up to application. We run events for pupils across Scotland, which typically involve a group of volunteers visiting pupils in their own schools or at universities. Additionally, we are building a broad range of video resources and live online events to further support pupils who may not be able to attend in person. We work with Reach Scotland to help us best identify pupils and schools who need the most help, and to create links with other widening participation programmes.
